The Bald Eagle is a bird of prey found in North America. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

Appearance

The Bald Eagle is a large bird, with a body length of 70–102 cm (28–40 in) and a wingspan of 1.8–2.3 m (5.9–7.5 ft). Females are about 25% larger than males, averaging 5.6 kg (12.3 lb) compared to 4.1 kg (9.0 lb) for males. Adults have a brown body with a distinctive white head and tail. The beak, feet, and irises are bright yellow. Juvenile birds are mostly brown with white mottling and do not acquire the full adult plumage until they are about five years old.

Diet and Hunting

Bald Eagles are opportunistic carnivores with a diet consisting mainly of fish. They also prey on waterfowl, small mammals, turtles, and carrion. They have been known to steal food from other predators, including ospreys and other eagles. Their powerful talons can exert a pressure of over 300 psi, allowing them to grip and carry prey weighing up to 4 kg (8.8 lb).

Habitat and Range

Bald Eagles are found throughout North America, from Alaska and Canada down to northern Mexico. They prefer habitats near coastlines, rivers, and large lakes where fish are abundant. They build the largest nest of any North American bird — up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and weighing up to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb).

Conservation

Once endangered due to habitat destruction, hunting, and the effects of DDT pesticide, the Bald Eagle has made a remarkable recovery. It was removed from the U.S. Endangered Species list in 2007. Today, the population is estimated at over 300,000 individuals, a conservation success story.

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on the planet. During its hunting dive, known as a stoop, it can reach speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph). It strikes prey with a clenched foot, stunning or killing it mid-air, then catches it as it falls. Their primary prey includes medium-sized birds like pigeons, doves, and waterfowl.

Appearance

Peregrine Falcons have a body length of 34–58 cm (13–23 in) and a wingspan of 74–120 cm (29–47 in). They have slate-grey upperparts, a white underside with dark barring, and distinctive dark cheek marks (malar stripes) on their head. Their yellow feet and cere contrast sharply with their dark beak.

Habitat and Range

One of the most adaptable raptors, Peregrine Falcons are found everywhere from tundra to tropical cities. They nest on cliff ledges and increasingly on tall buildings and bridges in urban areas. Their global distribution makes them the most widespread bird of prey in the world.

Conservation Success

Peregrine Falcons suffered severe population declines in the mid-20th century due to DDT pesticide, which caused eggshell thinning. After DDT was banned, intensive conservation efforts including captive breeding and reintroduction programmes brought them back. The species is now considered a conservation success story and was removed from the U.S. Endangered Species list in 1999.

Their plumage varies widely across subspecies, ranging from pale morphs with light bellies to dark morphs that are nearly chocolate-brown. The belly band — a streaked band across the abdomen — is a reliable field mark.

Hunting and Diet

These hawks are opportunistic predators. They perch on telephone poles, trees, or fence posts, scanning the ground for movement. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals like voles, mice, ground squirrels, and rabbits, but they also eat birds, reptiles, and carrion. They have a body length of 46–63 cm (18–25 in) and a wingspan of 91–153 cm (36–60 in). Their large yellow eyes are fixed in their sockets, giving them an intense stare. Their plumage is mottled brown, grey, and white, providing excellent camouflage against tree bark.

Hearing and Hunting

The Great Horned Owl has extraordinary hearing. Its facial disc funnels sound to its asymmetrically placed ears, allowing it to pinpoint prey by sound alone — even under snow or dense vegetation. They hunt primarily at night, using silent flight enabled by specialised feather edges that muffle wingbeats. Their diet includes rodents, rabbits, skunks, geese, and even other raptors.

Head Rotation

Because their eyes are fixed in their sockets, Great Horned Owls cannot move their eyes side to side. To compensate, they can rotate their head up to 270° in either direction. Wild Atlantic Canaries are smaller and less colourful than their domestic relatives. They measure 10–13 cm (4–5 in) in length. They have greyish-brown upperparts with dark streaking, a yellowish-green breast, and a pale belly. Males are more brightly coloured than females, especially during the breeding season when their yellow hues intensify.

Song

Like all finches, canaries have a pleasant, warbling song that has made them prized as pets for centuries. Male canaries sing to attract mates and defend territory, with each bird developing its own unique repertoire. Domestic canaries have been selectively bred for their song, producing famous varieties like the "Roller Canary" and "American Singer."

Domestication and History

Canaries were first brought to Europe in the 16th century by Spanish sailors. They became immensely popular among European nobility as caged songbirds. Selective breeding over centuries produced the bright yellow colour most people associate with canaries today — the wild bird is actually much duller. Diet and Feeding

Goldfinches are highly specialised seed-eaters. Their slender, pointed bills allow them to extract seeds from thistles, teasels, and other composite flowers that larger-beaked finches cannot access. The Mute Swan is one of the largest and heaviest flying birds in the world. Despite its name, it is not completely silent — it makes a variety of hisses, grunts, and snorts, though it lacks the loud trumpeting call of other swan species.

Appearance

Mute Swans are unmistakable with their pure white plumage, orange-red bill with a characteristic black knob at the base, and gracefully curved neck. They reach a body length of 125–170 cm (49–67 in) and a wingspan of 200–240 cm (79–94 in). Males (cobs) are larger than females (pens), weighing up to 15 kg (33 lb) — making them among the heaviest flying birds. They have over 25,000 feathers, more than any other bird species.

Behaviour and Temperament

Despite their graceful appearance, Mute Swans are notoriously territorial and aggressive, especially during the breeding season. They defend their nests vigorously against intruders, including humans, using powerful wing beats and bites. Their aggression has earned them a reputation as one of the most dangerous birds to approach. However, outside the breeding season they often gather in large, peaceful flocks.

Diet and Feeding

Mute Swans feed primarily on aquatic vegetation, which they reach by dipping their long necks underwater or upending — tipping forward to submerge their head and neck while their body floats on the surface. They also graze on agricultural crops, particularly in winter, which can bring them into conflict with farmers.

Habitat and Range

Mute Swans are native to Europe and Asia but have been introduced to North America, Australia, and New Zealand. They inhabit freshwater lakes, ponds, slow-moving rivers, and sheltered coastal waters. They have a slate-blue body, a white face with a black stripe extending above the eye, a long sharp yellow bill, and long grey legs. During the breeding season, adults develop elegant plumes on their head, neck, and back. Their slow, deliberate wingbeats give them a prehistoric appearance in flight.

Hunting Technique

These herons are masters of patience. They stand motionless in shallow water for long periods, waiting for fish, frogs, or small mammals to come within range. When prey is detected, they strike with lightning speed using their sharp bill to spear or grasp it. They can swallow surprisingly large prey whole — fish up to 30 cm (12 in) long — thanks to their expandable throat and flexible skull.

Behaviour

Great Blue Herons are usually solitary hunters but often nest in large colonies called heronries, which can contain hundreds of pairs. They are capable of flight at speeds of 40–50 km/h (25–31 mph). They are also known for a distinctive behaviour called "bill vibrating" — rapidly clacking their bill tips together as a territorial or courtship display.

Colour

The American Flamingo's iconic pink colour comes from carotenoid pigments found in the algae and crustaceans they eat. The richer their diet, the brighter their colour. Chicks are born with grey or white feathers and only develop their pink colour as they mature. Flamingos that do not get enough carotenoids in their diet will fade to white or pale pink — this is why captive flamingos are often fed a specialised diet to maintain their colour.

Appearance

American Flamingos stand 120–145 cm (47–57 in) tall and weigh 2.2–2.8 kg (4.9–6.2 lb). Their most striking feature is their bright pink to red plumage, with the deepest colour on the wings. They have a distinctive down-curved bill adapted for filter-feeding, long spindly legs, and a long curved neck. They often stand on one leg to conserve body heat.

Feeding

Flamingos feed by plunging their heads upside-down into the water and using their specially adapted bills to filter out tiny organisms. Their bills contain comb-like structures called lamellae that trap small shrimp, algae, and insect larvae while expelling water. They feed in shallow water and often stir up the bottom with their feet to dislodge food.

Habitat and Range

American Flamingos are found in the Caribbean, the Yucatán Peninsula, the Galápagos Islands, and along the northern coast of South America. In the United States, they are primarily found in southern Florida, where they are both resident and occasionally seen as visitors from Cuba and the Bahamas. Trunk-Climbing Adaptations

Woodcreepers like the Barred Woodcreeper are sometimes called "the woodpeckers of the Neotropics" because of their similar lifestyle, but they are not closely related to woodpeckers. Habitat and Marsh Adaptations

Appearance & Anatomy

Passerines vary enormously in size, from the tiny 6.5 cm Goldcrest to the massive 70 cm Common Raven. Their most distinctive anatomical feature is the anisodactyl foot arrangement — three toes pointing forward and one backward — which enables a powerful grip on perches. They also possess a highly developed syrinx (vocal organ) that gives them the ability to produce complex songs.

Behaviour

Most passerines build cup-shaped or domed nests, lay eggs in clutches of 2–8, and feed their young in the nest. They display an incredible range of behaviours, from the tool use of crows to the elaborate courtship dances of birds of paradise. Many species are migratory, travelling thousands of kilometres between breeding and wintering grounds.

Diet

Passerines have highly diverse diets. Many species are primarily insectivorous (especially during breeding season), while others feed on seeds, fruit, nectar, or small vertebrates. Crows and jays are famously opportunistic omnivores. Finches and sparrows are mainly granivorous, with specialised beaks adapted to crack seeds.

Breeding

Passerines are altricial — their young are born blind, naked, and helpless, requiring intensive parental care. Nests are typically built from grass, twigs, moss, and feathers, often lined with softer materials. Both parents usually participate in feeding the chicks, which fledge after 10–21 days depending on the species.

Accipitriformes is an order of diurnal (day-active) birds of prey containing approximately 260 species across several families, including Accipitridae (hawks, eagles, kites, harriers), Pandionidae (Osprey), and Cathartidae (New World vultures). They are apex predators found on every continent except Antarctica, occupying roles as both hunters and scavengers in their ecosystems.

Appearance & Anatomy

Accipitriformes share key adaptations for predation: hooked beaks for tearing flesh, strong talons for capturing and killing prey, and remarkably sharp eyesight — some eagles can see clearly from over 2 km away. Their wings vary from broad and soaring (eagles, vultures) to short and agile (accipiter hawks). Females are typically larger than males in most species.

Behaviour

These birds are masters of the sky. Hawks and eagles hunt by soaring high and swooping down on prey, while accipiters fly through dense woodland in pursuit of smaller birds. Vultures soar for hours on thermal updrafts, using their keen sense of smell (in Cathartidae) or sight to locate carrion. Many species are monogamous and maintain large territories.

Diet

Most Accipitriformes are carnivorous. Eagles prey on fish, mammals, and birds; hawks catch small mammals, reptiles, and birds; kites often specialise in insects or snails; vultures exclusively eat carrion. The Osprey is unique in eating almost nothing but fish, which it catches by plunging feet-first into water.

Breeding

Accipitriformes build large nests (called eyries) in tall trees, on cliffs, or on artificial structures. These nests are often reused and expanded year after year, reaching enormous sizes.
